Rainbow Room

Rainbow Room by SLBrown

When I was about 16 years old, I had a realization. I can’t remember where I was or what I was doing. I suddenly “knew” I had been born before and would be born again. Peacefulness and certainty accompanied this insight. There was an undoubting consonance of truth in my heart.
It wasn’t until thirty years later that I could reconcile the Christian believe in Heaven with my belief in reincarnation. In 1994, I joined the *Philosophy Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts where I studied Eastern traditions as well as Western. I came to realize that many spiritual paths lead to Truth.
Heaven is still the goal of the soul passing through millions of lives and the soul eventually attains it.  How does this affect how one lives this life? According to Paramahansa Yogananda, **”The Hindu scriptures say that is takes a million years of harmonious, disease-free living for the soul to be liberated. Therefore, comparatively little change is to be expected in the ordinary man from life to life. But one’s spiritual evolution may definitely be hastened by determined effort in right living an by the help of a true guru.”
So, I examine my life daily and work to improve it through good company: vegetarian diet, truthful speech and thought, fine art and literature. I read scriptures from different traditions: Vedanta, Christianity, Buddhism and more. I try to keep the company of good people; obey the laws of creation and of man.
I haven’t evolved into a saint, yet, but my life is satisfying and blissful.

*In 2008, the Philosophy Foundation reorganized into two schools: the Advaita Meditation Center and Practical Philosophy.
